Project Overview
Undertook a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the proposed Kilifi Eco-Industrial Park (KEIP), a 437.1-hectare Special Economic Zone designed to support diverse sectors including agro-processing, textiles, logistics, blue economy enterprises, and eco-tourism. The scale and multi-sector nature of the development required a systems-level approach to environmental and social planning.
Our Approach
As lead consultant, we delivered an end-to-end ESIA that went beyond regulatory compliance to support long-term sustainability, operational efficiency, and investor confidence.
Our approach integrated environmental science, socio-economic analysis, and strategic planning frameworks:
Baseline & Environmental Studies
- Terrestrial and Marine Ecology
Conducted detailed biodiversity assessments across both land and adjacent marine ecosystems, reflecting the project’s proximity to coastal and blue economy zones.
- Geology, Soils & Land Capability
Assessed soil stability, erosion risks, and land suitability to inform zoning and infrastructure placement.
- Air Quality & Noise Baseline Studies
Established pre-development environmental conditions to support future monitoring and compliance.
Social & Stakeholder Engagement
- Conducted household surveys and socio-economic baseline assessments to understand community livelihoods, vulnerabilities, and development expectations
- Mapped and prioritized stakeholders, including local communities, county authorities, and sector-specific actors
- Undertook a full Social Impact Assessment (SIA), including labour influx and service demand considerations
Planning & Management Frameworks
We developed a suite of operational tools to ensure long-term sustainability:
- Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for impact mitigation and monitoring
- Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) to institutionalize risk management
- Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) for ongoing communication and trust-building
- Influx Management Plan to manage population pressures during construction
Impact & Value Delivered
- Enabled structured, sustainable planning of a large-scale industrial zone
- Strengthened environmental and social safeguards across multiple sectors
- Supported regulatory submission to NEMA and project readiness
- Positioned the project as investment-ready with strong ESG credentials
