Project Overview
Conducted an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for a 14,500 MT Marine LPG Terminal in Shimanzi, Mombasa, involving complex infrastructure including mounded storage, transfer systems, and distribution facilities within a densely developed coastal environment.
Our Approach
Given the high-risk nature of LPG infrastructure, our approach integrated environmental and social assessment with advanced risk analysis and safety planning.
Technical & Risk Assessments
- Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA)
Modelled potential accident scenarios (e.g., leaks, explosions) and their consequences, informing facility design, safety buffers, and emergency planning.
- Air Quality & Climate Analysis
Assessed emissions and climate-related risks, ensuring alignment with evolving climate resilience expectations.
- Cumulative Impact Assessment
Evaluated the project in the context of existing industrial activities in Mombasa, ensuring a holistic understanding of environmental and social pressures.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Engaged government agencies, port authorities, and local communities
- Developed a stakeholder communication strategy to address risk perception and build trust
Management & Planning
- Developed a detailed Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) including:
- Emergency response systems
- Waste management strategies
- Water conservation measures
Impact & Value Delivered
- Secured EIA License from NEMA
- Enabled safe development of critical national energy infrastructure
- Reduced operational and reputational risk through robust mitigation planning
- Strengthened alignment with international financing and safety standards
